Law enforcement officials are investigating how over two kilograms of cocaine ended up hidden in a Caribbean Airlines flight yesterday.
According to a statement from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, airline security personnel made the discovery during mandatory checks.
The find was in two packages which weighed 2.2 kilograms.
The aircraft had arrived at 12:11hrs from Port of Spain, with an onward connection to Toronto.
CJIA said that the illegal substance was found in the aft hold – the belly of the aircraft – just after 13:00 hrs.
“After all baggage was offloaded from the aft hold, airline security conducted a sweep of the hold as per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). During the sweep, the drug was discovered.
Law enforcement officers were informed, and an investigation has commenced into the matter.”
With the airports- Ogle and CJIA- the main exits from Guyana, the attempts to smuggle drugs have been a regular occurrence with a number of ingenious ways found to hide the illicit substances. These include in cricket bats, pastries and even star-apples.
