The recent strained relations between the Guyana Police Force and members of the public have caused officials of the former group to evaluate ways of bridging the gap thus fostering improved relations between the two groups.
Towards this end, the Police have piloted several initiatives to achieve this objective as witnessed yesterday afternoon when a team of Police officers, headed by Cadet Officer, Mahadeo Singh and joined by businessman, Shahab Hack, trooped to the Buxton Community Centre Ground, ECD where Mr. Hack handed over a set of football gear to the Buxton Stars Football Club (BSFC) in the presence of the youth players of the club.
Mr. Hack explained that following discussions, he has decided to partner with the Guyana Police Force to keep the youths of that East Coast community productively occupied. “This gesture is in support of the vision of the Commissioner of Police who subscribe to the belief that vocational and skills training can be the catalyst to youth development,” explained Mr. Hack. He further hoped that the gesture would strengthen relations between communities and the Guyana Police Force.
Officer Singh echoed the sentiments of Mr. Hack saying that he is happy to associate with the projections and initiatives of his Commissioner. He said that he noted that many of the youths were not gainfully occupied, creating the perfect opportunity for criminal activities.
The law enforcement officer issued a call to conscientious businesses to support the idea to enable the police to expand to other communities.
Coach and Treasurer of the BSFC, Sheron Abrams, expressed gratitude on behalf of her President, Selwyn Williams and other executives. She said it was a timely gesture and she was confident that the youths of the club and the wider community will benefit.
“I wish to join with the donor and members of the Guyana Police Force in appealing to members of the corporate community to support this venture towards the development of our youths,”
Among the items donated were footballs, nets and uniforms. Ms. Abrams also disclosed that Mr. Hack had made a similar donation of uniforms and boots.
