Persaud and Arthur take veteran & junior categories
Team Coco’s member, Barbadian Darren Matthews was crowned the winner of the National Sports Commission three-stage road race 2014 edition which ended yesterday with the final stage from Kara Kara, Linden to Homestretch Avenue in the city.
This third stage was won by Guyanese Paul De Nobrega who covered the 64.5 miles (103km) distance in Three Hours 46 Minutes 14 Minutes, outsprinting Matthews and Orville Hinds in that order to the line.
A total of 53 riders faced starter’s orders for this stage with 47 completing the distance. Matthews’ overall time was 6 Hours 53 Minutes 08 Seconds.
Geron Williams (Continental Cycle Club) had to settle for the overall second place, his time was 6 Hours 54 Minutes 23 Seconds. Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams (Heatwave) ended third (6 hrs 54 mins 4 secs), Alanzo Greaves of Roraima Bikers Club (6 hrs 54 mins 57 secs), United Bike shop’s Orville Hinds (6 hrs 55 mins 26 secs) and Mauricio Robayo (Team Coco’s) occupied the fourth to sixth positions.
Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club’s Akeem Arthur edged out national champion and fellow Lindener Michael Anthony (Team Coco’s) for the top spot among juniors. Arthur completed the three stages in Six Hours 56 Minutes 28 Seconds. Stephano Husbands (Team Coco’s) was third.
Robin Persaud of Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club ended as the leading veteran relegating long time rival Junior Niles (Team Coco’s) to second with Stephen Fernandes of Continental placing third. Persaud’s overall time was Six Hours 56 Minutes 20 Seconds.
Matthews had won the first stage on Saturday last from Corriverton to New Amsterdam, while Marlon Williams took the second stage from Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue. The respective stage, overall winners and other top performers were all rewarded at the presentation ceremony that took place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall sometime after the race.
Matthews commenting after the race said that it was a tough event but he was prepared for the challenges of the Guyanese riders who have always provided him with stiff competition. He disclosed that his preparations for the race was second to none having just come off a three months stint in Columbia and will be heading to the USA to continue preparing for the Commonwealth Games where he is hoping to medal.
De Nobrega, commenting on winning the stage said that he had been preparing for the race and was not surprised that he won the final stage. He said that Hinds and Matthews are good in the hills and he called on his experience to pull him through, noting that the stronger teams had the edge in terms of their riders being able to do well.
