For the third straight year, Mr Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall Bourda Market is supporting the BCB/BCC&DA to host Guyana’s Independence T20 Cup 2014 to be held on Sunday May 25, 2014 at the famous Albion Cricket Ground.
This edition promises to be the biggest ever. It is expected to be played under international quality floodlights for the first time. There will be two semifinals with Berbice ‘A’ taking on Berbice ‘B’ from 11am followed three hours later by Georgetown Cricket Association vs BK East Coast Jaguars.
The winners will battle in the finals from 7pm under lights for bragging rights, trophies and cash incentives. Preceding the final will be a feature softball match between two top teams. As usual, proceeds from this event will go to several charitable organisations.
The two cricket clubs identified for assistance this year are Blairmont Cricket Club and Upper Corentyne Cricket Association. Three orphanages, two schools and the host venue Albion Cricket Ground are also earmarked to gain from this year’s mega event. The recently opened shelter for homeless and abused kids at Babu John, Bal Nivas will also be assisted as it prepares to serve the people of county from July 2014.
The BCB and BCC&DA will share the balance equally to fulfill their respective mandates. This gala event will form part of the Region’s celebration for Independence and will surely boast local tourism in the County for many fans from Suriname are expected.
At a simple ceremony held recently in Georgetown Mr Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall handed the winning trophy to Hubern Evans, second vice president BCB. He said that he is pleased to be part of this charitable event and was impressed with what they saw over years. He indicated that he loves sports and always willing to assist. Receiving the trophy on behalf of the tournament, Evans thanked Trophy Stall for his continuous support to Berbice Cricket.
Other sponsors on board so far are: Courts Guyana Inc, Demerara Bank Limited, Hand In Hand Insurance Company, Raffik and Sons Construction, Bissoondyal Singh of Elizabeth Style, Sunshine Supermarket, Danzies Clothing and Auto Sale, Geddes Grant, Nand Persaud of Karibee Rice, A Ally and Sons, Ishmael Poultry, Sentinel Security, New Building Society Ltd, Furniture World, Poonai Pharmacy, Zai Auto Paint, Balram Shane and Jayzee of the USA.
The organisers recently learnt that two clubs affiliated to the Berbice Cricket Board, Albion and Port Mourant have withdrawn their players. A source from the BCB said that they are not surprised by the move.
The tournament is set for May 25, 2014, the Sunday before Independence Day. The organisers will use the opportunity to honour President Donald Ramoutar who is expected to be present.
