Matthews and Geron Williams hold initial advantage with a stage left
Darren Matthews (Team Coco) 1:44:23 won this year’s first stage of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Annual Three-Stage Cycle Race which commenced yesterday in Berbice.
Marlon Williams (2:23:02) powered through to win stage two which concluded in Georgetown as the stage is set for an intriguing conclusion today.
The event wheeled off outside the Corriverton Police Station at 07:00hrs and journeyed to New Amsterdam, a distance of 46.6 miles. Matthews outsprinted Geron Williams, Delroy Hinds, Paul DeNobrega, Marlon Williams and Alonzo Greaves in that order to the line.
Stage Two, which begun from 14:00hrs yesterday, started from the Rosignol Stelling and proceed to Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, for the finish, a distance of 60.4 miles.
Williams edged out stage one winner, Darren Matthews, to the line with Geron Williams and Mauricio Robayo following.
There were several spills on the second stage, the most severe being at Rebecca Lust where several riders collided. Romello Crawford was ran over several times and required medical attention. He is reported to be in fine condition.
Meanwhile, at the completion of two stages – first from Corriverton to New Amsterdam and then from Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue- Team Coco’s Darren Matthews holds the overall lead with a time of four hours, 07 minutes, 11 seconds (04h: 07m: 11s).
In second position, two seconds behind, is Guyanese Geron Williams, riding for Continental
Cycle Club, in a time of four hours, 07 minutes, 13 seconds (04h: 07m: 13s), followed by another Guyanese, Marlon “Fishy” Williams, riding for Trinidad and Tobago’s Heat Wave, in a time of four hours, 07 minutes, 15 seconds (04h: 07m: 15s).
A total 96 riders registered, but only 85 started the race.
The event concludes today with Stage three commencing from 08:00hrs this morning from Kara Kara, Linden Highway, and end on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, a distance of 75.5 miles.
Cash prizes and trophies are on offer for the outstand performers. The event forms part of the annual calendar of cycling events staged by the NSC. The event has been coordinated by National Coach Hassan Mohamed MS.
