The heavy flow of traffic in and out of Canal No.1 Polder main road is expected to reduce shortly with the completion of the $664.7M Alternative Access Road to La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Construction of the structure is being managed by the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Central Housing and Planning Authority.
The structure is taking shape with contractors, GAICO Construction Inc and BK International completing a significant section of roadway. GAICO Construction Inc is responsible for Lot Two while BK International is working on Lots One and Three.
During a site visit yesterday, Kaieteur News observed staff of GAICO Construction Inc applying asphalted concrete to a section of the structure. This section of the roadway costs in excess of $300M and has a duration of 18 months. The contractor is tasked with paving 2,000 metres of roadway.
The structure is 10.55 metres wide and is made of white sand, loam, stabilized material, crusher run and 2 inches of asphalt.
According to Komal Singh, Managing Director of GAICO Construction Inc, physical works on the project began in June 2013 but encountered some delays owing to rice production in the area, weather and the shortage of aggregates.
Singh who traverses Canal No.1 Polder main road regularly, believes the completion of this alternative access road is a good investment that would benefit thousands of residents of La Parfaite Harmonie, Westminster, and Schoonord Housing Schemes.
