Police stated yesterday that slain ex-boxer, Trevor Bumbury, was a suspect in several robberies. Close associates linked him to Charlestown resident Rafeek Mohamed, who was dumped in the Atlantic Ocean five months ago after he was blasted in the face with a shotgun.
Bumbury, 48, of Charlestown, was found dead in the vicinity of DIDCO, Ruimveldt, last Monday. Two .32 bullets were later extracted from the back of his skull, but police are yet to make an arrest.
While Bumbury’s close relatives say they have no idea who killed him or why he was slain, police sources said that he was a suspect in several burglaries and robberies.
Kaieteur News was told that Bumbury was seen with “a set of money” and was “sporting heavily” the day before he was slain. He had reportedly later left for the Meadowbank wharf after drinking heavily.
Bumbury’s son, Trevor Edwards, said that his father worked at the Meadowbank wharf and that on Sunday, his father told him that he was going there to collect money from four boat operators.
Police believe that criminal elements use the area to dispose of stolen items. Sources who know Bumbury suggest that he suffered a fate similar to an alleged criminal associate, Rafeek Mohamed, whose body was found near the Atlantic foreshore in the vicinity of Ruby Backdam, Essequibo on December 17, 2013.
While Mohamed’s spouse stated that he sometimes offloaded fishing vessels at the Meadowbank wharf and sold clothing, police sources said they had information that the Drysdale Street, Charlestown man was a member of a gang that was involved in robberies and burglaries, including safe-cracking.
It is alleged that this gang would often dispose of their loot at the Meadowbank area. Sources who knew Mohamed suggested that the gang member was slain shortly after he was involved in “a job over the river”.
No one was ever arrested for his murder.
