Eight clubs along the East Coast corridor will compete for championship honours over the next six weeks when the curtains go up on the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) 2014 Senior League at three venues along the east coast starting Sunday May 25 next.
Ansa McAl, situated in Betterverwagting ECD and touted as a community oriented organization, has always been in the forefront in past league tournaments but was not called upon for corporate support since 2011, the last time that these championships were staged basically because the executive structure of the host entity was in shambles for a prolonged period.
The situation has recently been rectified when the EDFA recently hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elected officials to conduct its business over the next few years. To this effect Ansa McAl has willingly resumed the sponsorship arrangement and yesterday morning its Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yusuf was joined by Stag Brand Coordinator, John Maikoo in a press conference at that East Coast location to unveil the sponsorship package for the tournament.
Both Ansa McAl executives congratulated the organizers for their tireless effort in making the tournament a reality. Ms. Yusuf said that though her company has not assisted the EDFA, her executives have been busy rending similar support to football clubs on the West Coast, Upper Demerara and other regions.
She also reminded of her company’s input in other projects in the community. Ms Yusuf said that her company had also performed renovation works on the Betterverwagting ground while upgrading the washroom facilities.
Mr. Maikoo said that he felt that the East Coast League was somewhat neglected and his company felt an obligation to revitalize it. He wished the organizers well and told them that he was anticipating fruitful relations.
Organizing Secretary (EDFA), Joseph Wilson, was grateful for Ansa McAl’s support and expressed gratitude on behalf of his fellow executives. He acknowledged the past input of his benefactor and said that their return would certainly boost the plans and objectives of the EDFA. Consequently, Mr. Wilson revealed that apart from the imminent tournament, his executives have planned a packed itinerary which includes matches in the Under-13 and Under-20 categories.
He said that only last week his entity had organized a workshop where 14 coaches participated. Mr. Wilson further revealed that his executives will soon run off a beginner’s referees’ course.
Two other executives of the EDFA, First Vice President, Sheron Abrams and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Dellon Adams were also at the function.
Meanwhile, when action commences next Sunday, May 25, Buxton United will take on Mahaica while Victoria Kings tackle Ann’s Grove at the Buxton Community Centre Ground. The competition continues on Monday May 26 at the Betterverwagting Community Centre Ground with another double header. Thereafter, matches will be staged at weekends, up until July 13, with the Victoria Ground being the other venue.
The winning team receives $200,000 while the runners up take home $150,000. The teams finishing 3rd and 4th will receive $100,000 and $75,000 respectively while each participating team will receive an appearance fee of $14,000 to help offset training costs.
