The Ministry of Public Works has wrapped up the third phase of river defence works at
Good Success, East Bank of Demerara.
According to Kevin Samad, Chief Sea and River Defence Officer, the project involved driving steel sheet piles with an anchorage system and boulder scours protection on the river side.
“A total length of 250 metres was completed at a cost of $338M. It is the third project of similar nature to be completed along the East Bank Demerara corridor – between Good Success/Craig/New Hope area,” Samad stated in a Ministry of Public Works release yesterday.
During 2012, two projects that entail works of a similar nature were completed at New Hope and Craig, East Bank Demerara with lengths of 250 metres and 100 metres respectively.
According to the Ministry, it has also programmed an additional 500 metres of work to be executed during 2014-2016 along the New Hope/Good Success area.
Because of the nearby Demerara River, the area around the Craig and New Hope river banks has been eroding over the years. Time and again remedial works have been carried out, but the public road, which leads to Timehri and Linden, has constantly been under threat, sinking in sections.
“This project will be funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) – Third Sea Defence Project. Meanwhile, a contract has been recently awarded to M&B Construction for reconstruction works of approximately 500 metres at Mosquito Hall, Mahaica. The work entails construction of a rip rap structure at a cost of $275M.”
