An alert Prison Officer saw a convict crawling on his hands and knees and subsequently chased and nabbed him with a bag of ganja and other substances.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, the prisoner Sunil Tahal, 39, of Lot 19 Pope Street, New Amsterdam, who is serving a three-year sentence on a charge of possession of narcotics, was nabbed with the drugs while he was incarcerated at the New Amsterdam Prison.
The court was told that around 16:10 hrs on Thursday June 17, 2013, the prisoner was seen by a Prison Officer crawling through a fence heading towards the fowl pen. The man was placed under surveillance and was subsequently seen with a black bag. He was challenged and ran into the baker shop hotly pursued by two Prison Officers.
He proceeded to hide the bag among some charcoals.
The bag was retrieved and Tahal was arrested. The bag was checked and found to contain 229 grams of cannabis sativa, one cell phone and 10 packets of cigarettes.
He was handed over to the police and was charged.
He was granted bail in the sum of $200,000. However due to the fact that he is a convicted prisoner he will have to remain in jail.
His next court date is set for July 31.
