Statistician Charwayne Walker looks back at an impressive feat by regional wicketkeepers. So impressive only a small
amount has achieved this feat.
Only three Glovemen since 1958 have recorded a century and registered five dismissals in an innings in the same match in Regional first Class Cricket. First to achieve the feat was Barbadian Cammie Smith wicketkeeping for Barbados vs Jamaica at Sabina Park 1958. Smith scored 116 and took five catches in Jamaica first innings; Smith caught Allan Rae, John Holt, D.O. Thorbourn, E.G. Calneck and Frank Alexander. Please note Smith was filling in for Barbados regular wicketkeeper David Allan.
Jamaican Jeffrey Dujon emulated Smith feat in 1983 playing for Jamaica vs Windward Islands at Sabina Park. Dujon scored 102 and snared five catches in the Windward Islands first innings. He caught Winston Davis, Ignatius Caddette, Albert Texeira, Shane Julien and Julian Charles.
Barbadian Thelston Payne joined the illustrious duo in 1988 when he fashioned a flambouyant 127 and took 5 catches in the Windward Islands first innings at the Queens Park, St. George’s Grenada. Payne caught Lance John, Julian Charles, Lockhart Sebastien, Junior Murray and Thomas Kentish.
Would any of our young keepers step up and achieve or surpass this feat, only time will tell.
