He has been around for just over two years and while that is a very short time, there has been an encouraging and consistent trend to his development in the sport of rifle shooting.
Sherwin Felicien, a 36 year-old Information Technology Officer attached to Office of the President, Civil Defence Commission has been making strides for himself in the art of rifle shooting and was rewarded with a place on the Guyana National Rifle Association (GNRA) team currently competing at the Caribbean Championships in Reggae Island, Jamaica.
Felicien, speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that he was encouraged to start a career in shooting by his close friend and mentor, Caribbean Individual champion, Lennox Braithwaite.
“Lennox is the person who encouraged me to start shooting competitively; I have always loved shooting so it was not that of a challenge for me to start.”
Felicien has acknowledged that the sport calls for a high degree of discipline and believes that he will survive for a long time since discipline is one of the keys to his overall success in life.
National Captain Mahendra Persaud said he is happy to have Felicien as part of the national team and based on what he has seen so far, the sky is the limit for Felicien as long as he remains focused.
Persaud also shared that Felicien has been learning the basics very fast and has been a consistent competitor since he started; so it was not a difficult decision to include him on the team for Jamaica.
The experience for the latest member of the Guyana team has been awesome so far, he noted. Conditions here in Jamaica he said are somewhat different to Guyana, citing that it is very humid and bright”.
“It is kind of different to what I am accustomed to in Guyana but it is learning for me and I am grabbing it with open arms since I can only get better. I will put my best foot forward here and do the best for my country. The results won’t really matter right now; experience is what I am aiming for as I intend to be around for many more years to come.”
The last shooter to make his debut was Peter Persaud, three years ago and he is part of the Guyana team in Jamaica and both are contesting the individual championships.
As a first timer, Felicien is competing in the T Class which is for beginners at this level. Five others are in this class.
