The Ancient County of Berbice continues to churn out exciting young cricketers with many going on to represent the County, Guyana and the West Indies with pride.
Hailing from the busy town of Rose Hall, another promising player with rich talent is quickly developing a reputation as a star for the future. That individual is 16 year-old Brandon Prasad who was born on September 15, 1997 to Brandon and Veronica Prasad. He has a sister Katherine, who is older and attends the University of Guyana.
Brandon joined the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) in 2008 and over the years has represented the club at the Under-15, 17, 19, second division, intermediate and first division levels and has scored a total of 1938 runs whilst snaring 87 wickets with his leg spin bowling.
The promising middle order batsman, who is currently the Vice Captain of the Rose Hall Town Pepsi Under-19 team and Captain of the Rose Hall Town Bakewell Under-17 team, was recently promoted as Vice Captain of the club’s second division side, a clear indication he is being groomed for leadership at the senior level.
Brandon has scored three centuries: 105 vs Port Mourant and 108 against Big Star both at the Under-17 level and 129 vs Big Star in an Under-19 game. Brandon has also scored eight half centuries while his best bowling figures has been 7-27 against Port Mourant (U-15) and 6-13 against Guysuco Training Centre in the NBS second division tournament.
While not representing Berbice at the Under-15 level because of the Berbice Cricket Board’s withdrawal from the Guyana Cricket Board tournament in 2012, Brandon impressed at the Under-17 level last year which resulted in him being selected to represent Guyana in Trinidad.
He recorded encouraging innings of 35 in the game against Jamaica and an undefeated 30 against Barbados, claiming 4 wickets for 64 runs in the two innings that he was given the ball.
This year, Brandon was forced to miss the current Inter County Under-19 tournament and possibly the Under-17 Cup due to him preparing to write 9 subjects at the upcoming CSEC examinations.
Over the years, this talented player has won numerous awards at the RHTY&SC including Under-13 batsman of the year, Under-15 player of the year, most promising player (twice) and recently, the 2013 Berbice Under-17 player of the year award.
His role models in cricket are the legendary trio of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar while he stated quite proudly that joining the RHTY&SC was the best decision of his young career.
Brandon singled out for special mention; club Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster, Office Manager Moonish Singh, Coach Winston Smith, Test player Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Ravi Narine, Shawn Pereira and Delbert Hicks for their guidance and support.
Foster has described Brandon as highly disciplined and dedicated, stating that once he remains focused and disciplined, he can become a successful professional player in the future.
