A strong team of four junior players along with National Tennis Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan will wing out today to participate in the Antigua & Barbuda Caribbean Junior Invitational Championships which is expected to run from May 3-5 on the island.
Yesterday, Kaieteur Sport paid a visit to the National Park where the four players Jordan Beaton, Hemraj Resaul, Sarah Klautky and Kalyca Fraser were seen going through their final preparations before departure under the watchful eyes of Daly-Ramdyhan.
Speaking with the four players, Rasaul told this newspaper that the training was difficult, but he felt he had improved a lot since sessions were held continuously throughout the Easter holidays and it really allowed him to hit his strokes better.
Rasaul added that the entire team worked really hard and they are hoping to do well.
He said that he believes that every player who attends an overseas tournament should expect to do well.
Fraser, who though making her first appearance at the event has some prior experience playing in regional tournaments, having played at an ITF Tournament in Jamaica as well as the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) in French Guiana previously .She related that she has put in a huge effort in getting prepared and expects to do well.
Fraser is the Under-12 IGG champion.
Perhaps, the most precocious of them all is the baby of the team little Sarah Klautky, who will be making her first appearance in an overseas tournament. This ten year-old player said the training was intense, but instead of pressuring herself she decided to have fun and really enjoyed it.
She promised to make her first tournament the best yet.
Last, but not least is young Beaton, who participated in the competition previously and promised to use that experience to make Guyana proud.
Meanwhile, Daly-Ramdyhan said the team has had good preparations and expectations are high.
“The team is a strong one with sarah being the only player without prior experience playing outside Guyana. Our aim in the Guyana Tennis Association is to provide as much exposure for our players and get them to feel and understand what it is like to participate overseas,” Daly-Ramdyhan stated.
She reminded that Guyana won the Girl’s category last year, while Afruica Gentle captured the Ladies Singles crown.
Daly-Ramdyhan said the Easter Camp would have done a great deal of good for the team’s preparations, adding that they are all physically ready, because they were in the middle of national team training they managed to benefit from such sessions. She closed by saying that she expects the team to do well.
The team is set to return on May 6.
