Nineteen year old Luela Figuera was early Sunday morning crowned Miss Linden in front of an appreciative crowd that had converged at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground for the grand event- the first on the calendar of events of the much anticipated Linden Town Week.
Figuera, who was delegate number one, stole the hearts of patrons from the time she stepped on stage and did her first presentation. She proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, that she had the level of acuity, eloquence and charisma to capture the crown.
Her beauty and grace of course only added to the equation.
After the first presentations by the six delegates, who each chose an extraordinary and phenomenal Linden woman as their ‘platform’, it was hard to tell who would eventually clinch the crown, as most of the delegates were eloquent and confident.
But Figuera would forge ahead by leaps and bounds beyond the other delegates in the talent segment.
Not surprisingly, she chose poetry, a talent that she is well known for, having executed her talents on numerous occasions at the popular Jazz and Poetry nights in Linden.
Her piece, which was one of her own compositions, was impeccably articulated, and had the audience hanging on every word, while echoing their agreement with her proclamations.
And Luela definitely had a lot to say. According to her, she is a woman, and her name is Guyana!
She was shamelessly boastful, as she blew her own trumpet as to how beautiful and rich she is.
Linden, she said, was her ‘child’ and it was here that this budding and talented poet really proved that she could ‘work’ an audience.
The talent pieces by the other delegates who came after, though creditably executed, somehow paled after the aforementioned presentation.
The six delegates then donned sexy beach ensembles, which most modeled to perfection before going on to the evening gown segment.
Judging from the beautiful gowns on display, it certainly seemed no easy task for the judges to decide which gown should be adjudged best.
Of course the question and answer segment, which came last, is always keenly anticipated, because this is when the finalists are given the last chance to impress the judges.
The four finalists were Manouska Vyfhuis (Miss Nottinghamshire), Chelsea Venture (Miss Amelia’s Ward), Keyana De’Souza, (Miss Block 22), and Leula Figuera (Miss Canvas City).
Figuera’s question was based on the prevalence of the posting of nude photos on the internet by females, and her views and advice to those young women involved.
She replied that she found it ‘preposterous’ that young women would engage in such activity, and advised that in order to be respected, young women ought to first of all respect themselves.
Her answer saw her walking away with the title of Miss Linden.
First runners up were Manouska Vyfhuis, second runner up Chelsea Venture, and third runner up Keyana De’Souza.
Apart from copping the crown, Figuera also captured the prizes for best talent, best smile and miss congeniality. Venture won the most improved and most intelligent titles.
According to franchise holders, the top four delegates competed for a plot of land, along with $150,000, a sponsored one year paid tuition to attend the University of Guyana (UG) and a trip to a Caribbean destination.
The six beauties who vied for the prestigious title of town Week queen were 19-year-old Luela Figueira, Miss Canavas City, Miss Half Mile 19-year-old Wrenea Sidney, Manouska Vyfhuis, Miss Nottinghamshire, Chelsea Venture Miss Amelia’s Ward, Keyana De’Souza, Miss Block 22, Shanti Paul Miss Retrieve.
The girls were sashed on Wednesday last at a simple ceremony hosted at the L&L Lounge, on Greenheart St. in Linden.
An executive of “ De Sheriff Entertainment “, Lincoln Zephr, told the media that his team has taken the pageant to a “whole new level”, this time around.
“The successful queen is expected to be an ambassador to the community, especially youths. And the prizes which will be handed over to the queen as well as winners in the various categories are intended to enhance the participants’ quality of life.
Sponsors such as Banks DIH, BMGGI, Caribbean Airlines, Bolo’s Variety Store and Fine’s Jewelry World, among others, came in for high praise and appreciation from the promoters.
For the second consecutive year the Linden Town Week Pageant is a collaborative venture between De Sheriff’s Entertainment Group and Club L&L.
Today, the Linden Town Week will be officially opened with a Church service and a grand opening ceremony at the Georgetown/ Linden bus park.
The week of activities to celebrate the town’s anniversary, will include scrabble and spelling bee competitions, art and craft exhibitions, the Linden Expo to be held at the Egbert Benjamin Hall at Spieghtland, and the popular Wismar Night which will see Lindeners converging in Poker Street in Wismar next Friday night for a grand creole and entertainment extravaganza.
