…prison escapee among two being sought
One man who was seen just before the robbery in the day with the two prime suspects, remained in custody while police are on the hunt for two other suspects following the robbery of a Black Bush couple, on Tuesday.
The man and his wife were beaten and robbed Tuesday evening by two known bandits one of whom is a prison escapee and was armed with a gun. The couple has since been discharged from the Anamayah Memorial Hospital where they were rushed after the attack at their home around 19:00 hrs.
Baijnauth Niwaz, 58, and his wife, Kalawattie Niwaz, who are rice farmers, were relaxing at their Yakusari North, Black Bush Polder home when they were attacked and robbed by two men, one of whom was armed with a shot gun.
The bandits entered the couple’s home through an open door.
The couple had earlier in the day withdrawn some money and had made some payments. The rest of the cash was taken with them to their home to pay their workmen and those from whom they had purchased paddy. They had left one of the doors open when the bandits barged in and committed the robbery.
One of the perpetrators escaped from the New Amsterdam prison in 2011. The man, Vinood Gopaul, was 19 at the time. He hails from 34 Yakusari, Black Bush Polder, was remanded to prison for allegedly murdering his father and was among four persons who had escaped from the New Amsterdam prison in June 2011.
The man was reportedly hiding out in the Black Bush Polder area all the time, but residents were reluctant to come forward and inform the authorities.
The other escapees were Kevin ‘Long hair’ Narine, who has since been nabbed in Suriname and is reportedly serving time and Vijay Seenarine of Little India, Skeldon, Corentyne, who was remanded to prison on a charge of Carnal Knowledge. He has since been recaptured and is serving time.
The other, Rickford La Fleur, known as Rickford Williams, of Circle Street, Skeldon, and Vryheid’s Lust Squatting Area, ECD, who was remanded to prison on two charges of murder and two charges of trafficking in narcotics, remains at large. He is reportedly out of the country.
The police found an improvised shot gun at the scene.
Investigations are continuing.
