As the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the shooting to death of longstanding Detective Corporal Silburn Elias continued in the city court, the Prosecution called four more witnesses, including a forensic technologist.
Delon Abrams, 23, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown is charged with murdering Detective Corporal 14998 Elias from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID)on January 6, last at Alberttown, Georgetown.
Elias was reportedly shot after he went into a yard in Fourth Street, Alberttown to recapture an escaped prisoner and recover his colleague’s gun.
Corporal Elias was rushed to GPHC where he was pronounced dead. The post mortem was allegedly conducted and a bullet from a .38 revolver was retrieved from the cop’s body.
Abrams, who is accused of shooting the Detective Corporal, was recaptured and the charge was instituted against him.
The PI got underway on April 10 in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. A total of nine material witnesses have testified so far.
During yesterday’s proceedings, the Prosecution led by Corporal Bharat Mangru who is attached to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) called forensic technologist Tameka Henry, Detective Corporal Christopher Dharamraj, Lance Corporal Forde and Sergeant Christopher Humphrey to testify.
Adams, who is currently unrepresented by legal counsel, did not cross examine any of the witnesses.
The court has so far heard sworn testimonies from the Elias’ cousin-in-law Faye Holder, Assistant Superintendent of Police Marlon Taylor, Sergeant Sohan Ramdat, Lance Corporal Thomas and Constable Joel Greene.
The PI is scheduled to continue on May 6. A total of 28 witnesses is expected to testify on behalf of the state.
The deceased was a father of four. He resided at Buxton, East Coast Demerara. Corporal Elias had spent the last 25 years of
his life in the Guyana Police Force.
