Almost three weeks into the trial of Mahaicony murder accused, Satnarine Jaikaran, called Sato, and his nephews, Neville and Randy Crawford, the court heard the testimonies of Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh and the Prosecution’s main witness, Valerie Lyle.
Lyle had taken to the stand, yesterday.
The three men are before Justice William Ramlal and a mixed twelve -member jury at the Georgetown Supreme Court, for the murder of their relative, Maxwell Rendell Watson, who was allegedly chopped and beaten to death during “a family feud,” on January 29, 2010, at Little Abary, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Lyle, who failed to show up for court at a previous hearing, is said to be an eyewitness to the alleged crime.
She was called to the stand yesterday, by State Prosecutor, Dhanika Singh. Lyle told the court that she was the victim’s wife and had resided with him at Lot 60 Little Abary, Mahaicony, until the time of his death.
The witness took a few quick glances, in the direction of the prisoner dock, as she related her ordeal. The tone of her voice fluctuated, she appeared nervous.
After observing the woman’s actions, Justice Ramlal asked her, whether she was alright.
“I am just a little scared,” Lyle replied. The Judge reassured the woman that she has nothing to fear. After taking a deep breath, Lyle continued giving her evidence. She told the court that she knew, Jaikaran, the number one accused. He was her husband’s uncle. She said that she knew him for seven years.
Asked whether, she could identify her dead husband’s uncle, in court yesterday, Lyle pointed in the direction of the prisoner’s dock, where Jaikaran was seated. The accused stood up and she positively identified him. Lyle is expected to continue her evidence today.
However, before Lyle took the witness stand yesterday, Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, concluded his testimony.
After being deemed an expert in forensic pathology, Dr Singh explained to the court his finding, in regards to the Post Mortem examination conducted on Maxwell Rendell Watson.
He told the court that the victim sustained several wounds to the posterior aspect of his body, these included abrasions and incised wounds.
Dr. Singh noted that the body bore a wound that penetrated the left lung. He concluded that the post mortem examination revealed that the victim died of shock and haemorrhage, due to the perforated lung.
Under cross examination by Attorney-at-law, Jailall Kissoon, Dr. Singh agreed that some of the injuries, which the victim sustained, are consistent with someone who had been running and fell on a hard surface.
Kissoon is representing Jaikaran. Attorneys-at-Law, Satyesh Kissoon and Renee Kissoon, are representing the other two accused persons. Kissoon asked Dr Singh if he could say whether an injury to someone’s arm is consistent with barring or blocking during an attack of some sort. The doctor agreed that it is possible.
As such, the lawyer made an application for his client to reveal injuries to his forearm and back, to the ‘expert witness,’ and the jury.
His application was granted after Prosecutor Singh, told the court that she had no objection at that time. As such, the accused rolled up his sleeves and revealed a scar to the posterior aspect of his left forearm. The mark is just above his elbow.
His Attorneys assisted in lifting the back of his shirt as the doctor, examined the scar on his right shoulder. The doctor told the court that the scar appeared to be approximately, a half of an inch in length but noted that he could not determine the extent of the injuries or how long the ago it was inflicted on the accused.
The lawyer asked the doctor whether he conducted a toxicology analysis on the deceased, (whether he was tested for marijuana, alcohol or traces of other substance in his system).
Dr. Singh told the court that he did not conduct such an analysis because the Government Laboratory does not have the capability to do it.”
