International Mother Earth Day is observed on April 22, each year.
Yesterday, Guyana’s First Lady, Deolatchmee Ramotar observed the occasion by planting a sijan tree and pigeon peas plants at State House. These two plants have high protein content.
The sijan in particular has several benefits and contains vitamin A, calcium and iron. In Guyana, the leaves are used as a form of calaloo and the pods are used in Creole dishes like fish curry as well as in dhal.
International Mother Earth Day, also referred to as Earth Day, is annually celebrated worldwide. Each year, countries try to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The occasion was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries.
