Defending champions Berbice High School (BHS) hammered the hapless Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) 7-0 to stay in contention when play in the Berbice leg of the Scotiabank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy continued at the Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam recently.
BHS, looking to qualify for the finals in Georgetown, were led by their diminutive captain Dereck Taylor with four goals, while the consistent Shamar Arendell booted home three.
The BHS lads still smarting from their surprised first round lost to arch rivals BEI have since bounced back to score their second convincing victory so far. They were at it from the first whistle and VESS after showing some initial fight soon flattered to deceive as they conceded a penalty in the 20th minute which was converted by Taylor. The score remained at 1-0 at half time.
In the second half it was total dominance as the Taylor and Arendell show took over.
Taylor was on target early in the second half and blasted home two more goals including a penalty to account for his four strikes. Arendell for his part scored the third, fifth and sixth goals to account for his three as their hapless opponents had no answer to the assault.
The win has pushed BHS to the top of the points table with six points, the same as BEI, however with a better goal average. Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS), New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) and VESS are on three points each. Canje Secondary School (CSS) is still in the cellar without a point. (Samuel Whyte)
