After almost four hours of deliberation, the case against murder accused, Anthony Morrison ended yesterday, in a hung jury verdict.
Morrison appeared before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed 12-member Jury for the murder of his girlfriend, Donna Thomas, whom he had allegedly strangled to death between May 25 and May 27, 2012.
The 45-year-old woman was found dead in her D’Urban Street, apartment days after the incident, reportedly took place.
Thomas, a former employee of Professional Guard Service (PGS) was killed by her drug addicted boyfriend, (Morrison), because she refused to give up her money, which he had requested from her.
It was reported that some of the woman’s colleagues visited the premises days after the incident took place and observed that the front door was slightly open.
After calling and receiving no answer, they entered the apartment and saw Thomas motionless on her bed with marks of violence on her body.
An autopsy later revealed that Thomas had died from manual strangulation and blunt trauma to the head. Some of the bones in the woman’s neck were broken. She also suffered a broken thumb.
Morrison was arrested and charged days after the discovery of Thomas’ body.
He was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Onassis Granville, while Prosecutor, Natasha Backer presented the State’s case.
Following the summing up of the trial by Justice Singh yesterday, the mixed 12- member jury retired to consider the outcome of the case.
When the panel reappeared, the foreman announced that the jurors did not come to a unanimous verdict. As such, Justice Singh stated that Morrison will remain in prison to face a retrial at the next sitting of the Demerara Criminal assizes.
