Some vendors operating at the Parika Market, East Bank Essequibo are calling for the intervention of newly appointed Police Divisional Commander Senior Superintendent Ian Amsterdam to look into what they say is the random use of police ranks by a Regional official to carry out his personal bids.
Sherry Baksh and Zamal Khan, both operators at the bazaar say they are being continuously “harassed” by police officers under the command of Region Vice Chairman, Linden Fowler despite a court injunction filed to have the regional official cease the “harassment” of vendors operating outside the market.
The vendors say that around 07:00 hours yesterday, Fowler with a van load of “black clothes” police officers demanded that three vendors, out of a line of several, remove their items from where they were operating.
They alleged that under the instruction of Fowler, the ranks demanded that all goods be removed from the area before they (officer) started to remove the items themselves. In a bid to save their goods, the vendors said that they tried to remove their items as quickly as possible to pack it in their trucks, but the police started to “scatter it on the ground before making threats.”
Baksh said that it is the fourth time they have experienced such attitude from the police who they claim always operate without identification badges. One woman said it is her belief that there is an ulterior motive to the regional official’s behavior, since he continues to ignore the court matter which was in session last Monday, and since he reportedly targets specific vendors selling poultry and groceries items.
The woman said that another area is being built for the sale of fish and meats, “but in the meantime what are we to do? My children have to eat.” The woman said she sometimes operates at Vreed-en-Hoop and she is very disturbed that one of the officers should threaten her saying, “Don’t forget I know you does sell at Vreed-en-Hoop.”
When Kaieteur News tried making contact with Fowler for a comment yesterday, his cellular phone was turned off.
