Lawyers for Teneisha Evans were yesterday granted an extension by the Court of Appeal to file an appeal. Evans is the girlfriend of Colwyn Harding.
Harding is the young man who was allegedly assaulted by a Police Constable of the Timehri Police. The Police Constable, identified as Singh, is accused of inserting a condom covered baton into Harding’s anus, damaging his intestines.
Attorney at law Nigel Hughes, who is representing Evans, told Kaieteur News yesterday that an appeal was not filed for Evans since the time had passed. He explained that persons who want to file an appeal have two weeks to do so. However this was not done with Evans who was sentenced since last year. Hughes said that it was only after the Harding story broke that the lawyers realized that there were more persons involved in the matter.
He said that they applied to the Court of Appeal for permission to expand the time to file an appeal for Evans. The court has granted the expansion and the matter will be heard on April 30.
Evans was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for selling her grandmother’s television set; the money for which she used to post bail for Harding.
Both Harding and his girlfriend were arrested by the said policeman and his colleagues on November 15, 2013.
It was alleged that after Harding was placed on $50,000 bail, his girlfriend sold her grandmother’s television set so that she could post bail for the young man.
However, the young woman was arrested for the offence and sentenced to two years imprisonment at the New Amsterdam Prison, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
Constable Singh is currently back, on the job without charge.
