Students attending Secondary Schools across Region Two, walked with teachers, Welfare Officers and Social Workers, from Henerietta Village to the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School, in Cotton Field, on the Essequibo Coast.
They were all making an attempt to stop the occurrence of suicide, especially in the Region.
The event was hosted by the Department of Education in conjunction with the local NGO, Hope For All, under the theme”Speak up and prevent suicide.”
Regional Education Officer, Baramdai, asked students to be observant and to pay keen attention to suicidal tendencies, especially among their peers.
Mrs. Seepersaud further urged students to speak up and to find ways of garnering help from mature, respectable individuals. She said suicide has taken away too many of our valuable Guyanese. She made reference to Guyana’s status of having less than a million people.”Say no to suicide, yes to life; be positive, live life, experience it.”
Gillian Vyphuis, Chief Schools welfare officer, complimenting the Region Two Department of Education for organizing the awareness of suicide march. She reminded, especially the students that suicide is not the final straw.
The Chief Welfare Officer said that suicide is not “poetic” and it should not be “glorified.” The Chief Welfare Officer added that suicide is everybody’s business and all should be involved in addressing the issue at hand.
Vyphuis advised students to be “contented” and not to act on suicidal thoughts, but instead to seek help from elders, teachers, and pastors because one’s life is extremely valuable.
Vyphuis reminded students that there is always a way out and as research has shown that persons who maybe addicted to alcohol, drugs are more prone to taking their own lives.
“You may be feeling confused; suicide might feel like the only way out.”
Parmanand Persaud, the Regional Chairman, explained that suicide is sometimes executed as a spontaneous act by someone, who is depressed due to various social, or financial, or at times being uncomfortable with oneself.
Persaud believes that Communication among students and teachers and parents is critical, while expressing ideas to comprehensively fighting suicide.
Items of poems, songs and dance were performed by students. The event was hosted in the purpose hall of the Anna Regina Secondary School. (Yannason Duncan).
