A cycle owner telephoned a resident to inform him that someone had borrowed his bicycle and had left it by the resident’s home. However, the police are convinced that a taxi driver’s sudden return to his home may have surprised some thieves who fled the premises leaving a bicycle behind.
The police have since taken possession of the bicycle. And the owner is in custody assisting with investigation.
According to information, last Tuesday , taxi driver John New Year, 52, of 13 New Road, Adelphi Village East Canje, Berbice would usually leave home very early ( between 04:00hrs and 05:00hrs) to make some trips before returning home during the mid-morning and then go out again.
On the day in question it was no different. He left his home around 04:35 hrs to ply his trade. However there was a power outage and New Year decided to return home earlier than expected.
Upon entering his premises he noticed a bicycle in the yard. Becoming suspicious, he looked around and noticed that one of his back windows was open. A closer inspection revealed that the window was wrenched open.
New Year, decided to look around and discovered over $250,000 that he had put away to do some business, missing. He also discovered that his precious bird and cage valued were also missing. A report was made at the Reliance Police Station and ranks responded promptly.
The bicycle was taken possession of and a manhunt was launched for the owner. The man who is from the area, realizing his slim chances subsequently made contact with New Year informing him that he understood that his bicycle was left at his premises.
Upon having his query confirmed he stated that he knows nothing of the matter, but that he had lent his bicycle to a man named ‘Town Man, since the night before. He was subsequently arrested.
Efforts to contact ‘Town Man’ to confirm the story have been unsuccessful so far since he cannot be located.
However police stated that the bicycle owner is a lover of birds and is a known bird thief. He was only recently released from prison. He is still in custody as investigations continue.
