DEAR EDITOR,
David Hinds’ focus on his pride in his race still does not address the issues of logic and reasoning raised in my letter.
I refer to his letter titled “I don’t mind being judged, among other things, by the colour of my skin—just judge me fairly” (KN, April 8, 2014). It seems to be responding to my letter titled “David Hinds plays the race card with the police brutality problem” (April 6, 2014).
As an academic, David Hinds should know better than launch into a long-winded diatribe extolling his African-ness and his remarkable freedom-fighting history as a defence to my position that he intellectually and logically made largely baseless, questionable and illogical contortions, contentions and conclusions on a matter that is racially tumultuous.
I do not question Hinds’ ethnic or racial pride, identity or his incredible history of struggle. In fact, I celebrate it. What I question is a volatile letter he wrote that was logically shaky, intellectually disturbing, ethnically agitating and masqueraded on such unsteady reasoning that when logically explored and examined led to absurd and questionable results.
This is not an issue of balking at discussing race or refusing to talk plainly about race, it is about the cogency of argumentation, the necessity of proof and the demand for evidence along with rationality and logic in presenting positions, particularly on race in Guyana. Hinds has not responded to the gaping chasms in his argument, which I have highlighted. Extolling his valiant history of struggle or his racial pride does not address these issues.
It is time we start using the public space provided by the fourth estate (media) to not only make a point but to make sense and provide logic and proof, particularly on racially divisive issues. That should come from everyone, especially renowned personalities like Hinds.
