West Demerara defeated Georgetown by 60 runs in their second round game of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB)/Demerara Fire and General Insurance Company Inter Association Under-19 50-overs tournament yesterday at Wales.
Outstanding batting performances by Malcolm Hubbard, Ronaldo Renee and Daniel Basdeo guided West Demerara who batted first to a challenging 231-6 after the game was reduced to 48 overs due to a late start caused
by seepage on the pitch.
The host lost an early wicket when Kevin Seepersaud (00) was run out in the first over with only one run on the board. Renee and Travis Persaud (18) added 57 for the second wicket to lay the foundation for a respectable total before Persaud was bowled by leg spinner Steven Sankar. Chaitnarine Pooran (01) soon lost his stumps to Georgetown skipper Michael Shallim before Renee and Hubbard put together 43 for the third wicket.
The duo rotated the strike sensibly, but just as Renne appeared set for a well deserved half century he was caught off Tariq Dharanlall for 47 with seven fours off 87 balls at 100-4. West Demerara then lost Avenash Dhaniram (05) before Hubbard and Daniel Basdeo dominated the opposition’s bowling which was sometimes wayward, taking their team to 200 in the process. Part time seamer Tevin Imlach gave his team the breakthrough with the wicket of Basdeo who stroked 44 with three fours off 49 balls.
Kevin Paul joined Hubbard and the pair entertained the small but vocal crowd with some lusty hitting towards the end. Hubbard who was later named man-of-the-match ended unbeaten on 56 while Paul finished on 23 not out (1×4 2×6). The right handed Hubbard faced 98 balls and reached the ropes on five occasions. Dharanlall, Steven Sankar, Imlach, Rajendra Dhanraj and Shallim claimed one wicket each.
Georgetown were bowled out for 171 in 42.1 overs in reply. Opener Sunil Singh (00) was bowled behind his back by medium pacer Paul in the first over with the score on one, but Imlach and Sherfene Rutherford stabilized the chase with a second wicket partnership of 59.
Rutherford signaled his intentions early by hitting left arm pacer Basdeo for consecutive fours over mid wicket forcing West Demerara captain Travis Persaud to replace him {Basdeo} with off spinner Richie Looknauth.
The move did not matter much to Rutherford who pulled the spinner over the mid wicket fence for a couple of maximums before Paul ended their resistance with the wicket of Imlach LBW for 11.
Persaud then turned to his most experienced slow bowler, Hubbard. The change brought immediate success as the off spinner trapped Dhanraj LBW (03) at 65-3 and had Rutherford caught at short mid wicket two runs later. Rutherford departed for 44 (5×4 3×6).
Clevon Mc Ewan was then run out in a terrible mix up with Kemol Savory as Georgetown found themselves in trouble at 68-5. Savory and Dharanlall tried to keep their team in the hunt with a sixth wicket stand of 54 before Dharanlall was caught behind for 23 (2×4). When Savory was stumped by Renee off Persaud for 27 (2×4) at 124-7 the rest of the batting folded meekly to give the home team a well deserved victory. Hubbard grabbed 4-26 off 10 overs while Paul and Looknauth had two apiece.
