– Victim’s mother tells court, son was attacked by accused
A mixed 12-member jury heard the testimony of Ramkumarie Manbahal, the mother of murder victim, Lakhram Persaud, when the trial of 75-year-old Albert Andries continued in the High Court before Justice Dawn Gregory on Tuesday.
Andries is facing the court for Persaud’s murder, which occurred on July 27, 2012 at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara. He reportedly stabbed Persaud, who was his stepson at the time. The incident reportedly took place at Manbahal’s Lincoln Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara residence.
Persaud, called ‘Bojo’, was allegedly stabbed twice in the chest by his stepfather.
The 75-year-old accused is said to be ailing. He is said to be experiencing difficulties walking. He allegedly suffered a stroke a few years ago. He pleaded not guilty to the crime when the trial commenced at the High Court.
Andries is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Sonia Parag, while State Prosecutors include Attorneys-at-Law, Mercedes Thompson and Lloyd Mark Conway.
At the substantive trial, before the voir dire began, evidence was led to show that the accused was the stepfather of the deceased.
The accused was arrested and charged with murder following an argument which he had with his stepson which ended with the 34-year-old man, being fatally injured.
Yesterday, the witness told the court that she was in ‘a visiting relationship’ with Andries, when he stabbed her son to death.
The woman claimed that on the night of the incident, she awoke to her son’s voice calling from outside her two- storey home. “He wanted to come inside.”
Manbahal said that she asked the accused to open the door for her son since she was already tucked in bed and couldn’t move immediately. The woman however, claimed that when she came downstairs, she saw the accused choking her son.
“When he open de door, like de boy go fuh wash he face in de bathroom and he (Andries) go behind de boy. Me run behind am and me say ‘Ow, ow Albert nah do dat’.
“He say, ‘Me go kill am’ and throw me down and me nah able. He grab meh son and he bring am till outside by de fridge and he stab am,” Manbahal recalled.
The woman claimed that she lost consciousness during the time of the altercation between the deceased and her son. Several police witnesses have since testified in the trial.
Additional witnesses are to be called.
