10th Universal Auto and General Supplies 11-Race Cycle Meet …
Seasoned campaigner Robin Persaud returned to winning ways when he took the top podium spot in the feature 35-lap school boys and invitational race at the 10th annual Universal Auto and General Supplies (UA&GS) 11-race cycling programme yesterday at the National Park.
Persaud, who was one of 42 riders that faced starters orders, showed excellent form and stamina on a day which saw brilliant sunshine that tested the fitness of the field. The veteran cyclist pulled on his experience to come out as the champ on the day in One Hour 16 Minutes 17.18 Seconds.
It was not easy sailing for the winner as there was a four-way sprint to the line where Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey and Mario King were all in contention.
But Persaud would not entertain any fierce challenge from his experienced rivals and separated himself from the rest early on the final lap to claim victory in grand style.
Williams got the better of Jeffrey to take the second spot with King taking fourth. Albert ‘Bertie’ Philander took the fifth place ahead of junior sensation, Michael Anthony who had to settle for sixth.
The prime prizes were shared by Williams, Godfrey Pollydore and Jeffrey with two each while there was one for Hamzah Eastman and Christopher Holder.
Avish Ramlakhan won the 12-14 Boys and Girls race, while Stephen Fernandes (Under-50), Linden Blackman (Over-50) and Anthony Fariah (Over-60) were the veteran winners.
Taking the top spot in the juvenile event was Cleveland King. Clyde Jacobs topped the field in the Mountain Bike match-up with Sherwin Sampson winning the BMX 6-9 race yet again as well as the BMX 9-12 class.
Ammo Gomes placed first in the BMX 12-14, while Daniel Vossey achieved a similar feat in the BMX Open event.
Race organizer and National Coach Hassan Mohamed expressed gratitude to sponsor Universal Auto and General Supplies and owner Shameer Baksh for committing to another year, the 10th successive year.
Mohamed complimented the riders for their commitment also, while informing them that a hectic remainder of the year awaits them.
Race sponsor Shameer Baksh is no stranger to the sport, he competes in the veteran Under-50 category, noted his pleasure in making a contribution to the development of Guyana’s talented riders. Mohamed and riders were assured by Baksh that the event in 2015 is secured.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
