The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of former Swiss House Cambio Managing Director Farouk Razac, yet again commenced at the city court yesterday and four civilian witnesses were called to offer sworn testimonies on behalf of the State.
For a second time, Razac’s wife, Carol Ann Lynch, is charged with murdering him on May 7, 2007 at their Lot 106 Ireng Place, Bel Air Park, Georgetown residence.
The post mortem examination showed that the businessman died as a result of “asphyxiation (suffocation) due to possible ligature strangulation.”
Four days later, Lynch was charged with his murder but in 2008, the first Preliminary Inquiry (PI) ended when the then Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys had discharged the accusations, citing that insufficient evidence had been provided to establish a case of murder against her.
Ever since the 2008 discharge of the matter, the charge, which in 2010 was ordered to be reinstituted to Lynch by the Director of Public Prosecutions, was only read to her on January 22, last, as she had evaded the police for the three years.
The pre-trial matter is before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Lynch is being represented by Attorneys Peter Hugh and Latchmie Rahamat.
At yesterday’s hearing, Sharon Sanmogan, the couple’s friend, was the first to take the stand and offer a testimony of what occurred the night before the murder.
Next to give evidence in the matter was the couple’s fitness trainer, Karan Dutt. His testimony was followed by that of technician Joseph Chung who explained to the court the role he played in installing a surveillance system at the couple’s home.
The final witness was Robert Lynch Jr., the brother of the accused, who under oath related what he had done during the investigation of the murdered man. Lynch related the part he played during the Post Mortem examination.
All except Robert Lynch Jr. were cross examined by Lynch’s lawyer.
A total of ten civilian witnesses were expected to be present at yesterday’s hearing, but only seven presented themselves before the court. Four of the seven, were called to take the stand and by request of Corporal Bharat Mangru, who prosecuted, the other three will testify today. Arrest warrants have been issued for the other witnesses who failed to appear in court.
Hugh, however, beseeched the court to refrain from issuing an arrest warrant for Lynch’s 14-year-old daughter who failed to present herself because of her school examinations.
The PI is scheduled to continue today. A total of 21 witnesses are expected to testify on behalf of the state.
