With funding from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Youth Challenge Guyana (YCG) is finalising plans to host a public seminar on ‘photo story telling’ for youths, with a particular focus on the environment.
The forum, which comes as part of the CDB Vibzing Outreach Programme, is slated to be held on Friday at the Regency Suites/Hotel, Hadfield Street, Georgetown. It is expected to attract the attendance of approximately 100 youths between the ages of 16 and 29 drawn from Regions Three, Four, Five and Six.
The edification forum, which is being offered at no cost to participants, will be facilitated by lectures of the University of Guyana’s Centre for Communication Studies.
According to YCG’s Executive Director, Dmitri Nicholson, “it is intended to introduce youths to the basic concepts of photo story-telling and such skills in addition to information about climate change, so that youths can participate in the youth for climate change contest.”
The contest, he explained, is the ‘Vibzing Guyana Photo Story Challenge’ organised and sponsored by the CDB with collaboration from both YCG and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
The challenge will require that contestants produce a collection of related photos organised in sequence that tells a story. It is expected that those involved in the challenge will mainly utilise smart phones or handy digital cameras.
Nicholson disclosed that although the planned seminar will reach a selected number, there are plans to have a production made whereby others could be introduced to the concept of photo story-telling as well.
“The intention is once the youths acquire the skills of photo story-telling they will be able to tell their own stories or highlight the issues in their own communities,” said Nicholson.
And since the seminar is designed to help prepare youths to tell stories about the environment, it is expected to see them embracing the theme “Youth Voices for Climate Change.”
Moreover, the Challenge, Nicholson said, will give youths the opportunity to use their creativity in producing a photo story which is aimed at raising awareness on climate change resilience and adaptation through the message of stories created with photographs. He pointed out that the main purpose of the preparation is to help the youths be able to set themselves apart, ahead of the challenge, which is arguably a new venture for Guyana.
And since the challenge will be characterised by a competition, the entrants who exhibit the best photo story-telling skills will be eligible for prizes ranging from as much as a US$500 Visa gift card to a US$100 Visa gift card.
The Challenge was officially launched on Monday last by CDB and is expected to come to an end on May 9, 2014. The competitors will develop photo stories that address one of five climate-related categories including: Climate Change and Agriculture, Climate Change and Forest Resources, Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Climate Change and Waste Management and Climate Change and Water.
According to Nicholson, those desirous of participating in the preparatory seminar can easily do so by contacting YCG on telephone numbers: 225-0129, 223-7884, 227-5779 or by sending an email to [email protected].
