A 42-year-old labourer, who fled police custody while being held for a break-in, was yesterday sentenced to prison by Magistrate Faith McGusty after he confessed to the crime.
The Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday heard that Kishore Dookil escaped from police custody at Providence, East Bank Demerara in an attempt to evade a charge of break and enter and larceny.
According to the police, between March 9 and March 10, last, he broke and entered the house of Narindra Maloya in Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and stole his Pioneer amplifier, two cellular phones, one bottle of Johnny Walker and $34,000.
Dookil, a resident of Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara admitted to both misdemeanours. He told the Magistrate that he regretted his actions and begged the court to be lenient.
He was then sentenced to one year in jail for the escape from lawful custody charge and 30 months for the break and enter and larceny. The jail terms will be served concurrently.
