Dear Editor,
I am thankful for the opportunity to join in paying tribute to the late Mrs. Deborah Jan Osman-Backer.
There are so much beautiful things which have been said already that I can hardly say much more, except to mention certain aspects of her life which have not been looked at.
The first thing is that Mrs. Backer is a combination of East Indian and African ancestry from Alboystown and Kigston, respectively. Alboystown reminds me of Nazareth. Jesus came out of Nazareth and Mr. Osman, Rex McKay and Chief Justice Ian Chang to name a few outstanding persons came out of Alboystown.
Her mother came from a prominent family of African ancestry from Kingston, Georgetown. She went to Bishop High School with the late Mrs. Viola Burnham and Mrs. Winifred Gaskin.
Deborah’s grandfather was a prominent Headmaster, her uncles held top position; one an Education Officer, another a Permanent Secretary, another a top soldier, while an aunt was a Matron at the Mental Hospital Berbice, and her mother an Administrator at the Bauxite Company. This is the background in which our dear Deborah grew up.
Therefore what she has become is no magic. She inherited traits from both sides of her ancestry, Indian and African, and this is what caused her to excel. While we continue to shower praises on her, I invite you to also examine her background and see how we can benefit from it as a nation.
I believe that the political parties could take a leaf out of her book and bring the races in this country together so that we can get results like Deborah Osman-Backer. To start with, the current budget issue.
This would be excellent for all Guyana and not only for a few as it now appears. The entire nation will start developing as she did.
Deborah Osman-Backer’s life can be a perfect example for us to follow as a nation having examined her accomplishments against her upbringing.
May her soul rest in peace
