Guyana is expected to receive the fourth tranche of payment under the Government of Guyana and Kingdom of Norway agreement. Guyana has already earned US$115M in three consecutive payments.
This is according to a press statement from the Office of the President yesterday, which noted that under the agreement, Norway has committed to providing Guyana with up to USD 250 million by 2015, depending on Guyana’s delivery of results from avoided deforestation. However, the statement did not disclose the figure to be released to Guyana from the GRIFT account held by the World Bank.
The release stated that President Donald Ramotar yesterday received a technical team from the Kingdom of Norway comprising members of the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and the Environment and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad); Marianne Johansen, Maarten van der Eynden, and Mads Halfdan Lie.
It was noted that progress under the Guyana-Norway partnership and the implementation of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), as well as matters regarding support for the implementation of LCDS projects were among the key areas of discussion.
According to the statement, the President has reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment under the partnership and shared perspectives on Guyana’s LCDS and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation plus (REDD+) model.
On November 9, 2009, Guyana and Norway entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to foster cooperation on issues related to the fight against climate change.
Since then, the monies released have been utilized to support the implementation of several projects under the LCDS, including the Micro and Small Enterprise Project, Amerindian Development Fund and the strengthening of key institutions. The Amaila Hydro project will also benefit from funds earned under the Norway partnership.
While in Guyana, the visiting team is expected to be part of a review of progress made to date on the implementation of Guyana’s MRVS roadmap, the release said.
