The 18-year-old who had stabbed his aunt’s boyfriend to death in 2010 was on Thursday sentenced to seven years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter at the High Court. Eddie Williams appeared before Justice William Ramlal to answer a charge that in November 2010 he stabbed his aunt’s boyfriend, Jermaine Jones, to death at Ruimzight, West Coast Demerara after a confrontation.
A probation report by a state social services worker stated that Williams had killed Jones because the deceased was in the habit of beating up on the teen who was 18 years old, at the time. The report which gave a background into the life of the accused stated that the teen expressed disgust at the constant abuse he faced at the hands of the deceased.
It is alleged that on the day of the incident the accused and the deceased ended up in a fight that led to the stabbing. Williams had escaped from lock ups, but was recaptured by the police in February the following year.
A manhunt was launched for the accused and action was taken against prison officers for what was at the time described as their negligence. The escape was also described as a mystery since his absence was only known when a count of the prisoners was conducted. There was no idea how he left the compound.
Prison authorities suggested that Williams had escaped by climbing the eastern fence surrounding the main penal institution during a downpour. It was also suggested that the man who was involved in kitchen duties, might have calmly walked out through the main gate of the prison.
After handing down the sentence, Justice Ramlal ordered that the Director of Prisons deduct the full number of years that the teen had already spent while on remand.
The accused was represented by Attorney at law Onika Archer and prosecuted by State Prosecutor Natasha Backer.
