Police prevailed over Guyana Defense Force (GDF) on a better run rate after rain stopped play when the Balram Raghubir Inter Service 40 over cricket competition continued yesterday.
In reply to Police’ total of 240-7 in 40 overs, GDF were 79-4 after 25 overs, when rain sent the players off the field at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. At that stage the Army team needed to be at 151 to win the contest. Play was not possible after the showers due to seepage on the pitch.
Paul Castello slammed two fours in a top score of 34 while off spinner Kelvin Leitch snared 2-14, Michael Newland 1-8 and Trevor Benn 1-12.
Earlier Vishal Jaigobin stroked a fluent 89 which included six fours and two sixes to propel Police to their eventual total. The host lost a few early wickets, before Jaigobin shared in a sixth wicket stand of 77 with Benn to steady their innings.
Following Benn’s dismissal for 33 (4×4 1×6), Jaigobin added 93 for the seventh wicket with Newland who ended unbeaten on 46 (6×4 1×6). Carl Campbell grabbed 3-19 off eight overs and Castello 3-46 from eight.
Fire Service overcame Prison Service by four wickets at GDF ground. Prison Service were bowled out for 72 in 15.2 overs, batting first while Fire Service replied with 73-6 in 17.2overs.
The competition continues today.
