St Lucia -The MV Lady Zai has been given the all clear, following a health scare aboard the vessel.
The cargo ship entered St. Lucia’s waters on March 8th, with one crew member dead and another seriously ill.
An emergency post mortem determined the 53-year-old Guyanese national died from Bronco-Pneumonia and the hospitalised crew member was also suffering from a respiratory illness.
Ministry officials say the health scare has been effectively managed and the quarantine lifted.
Chief Environmental Health Officer, Wenn Gabriel, says a thorough inspection of the vessel and its cargo was conducted.
The vessel brought animal feed to Suriname and Guyana and was destined for Port Vieux Fort.
Managing Director of Caribbean Grains Limited, Max Edouard, says the lifting of the quarantine is a great relief for the local poultry sector.
On Thursday, health officials presented Professional and Confidential Services Ltd, the agency responsible for the cargo vessel, with formal notification of the order to lift the quarantine.
The order allows for the ship’s cargo, to be dispatched at Port Vieux Fort under specific conditions. (htsstlucia.org)
