Qualafon Guyana romped to an emphatic 10-wicket victory in fading light against The Upper Level Barbers in the Final of the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Noble House Seafoods Corporate 15-15 Cricket Tournament fundraising cricket tournament yesterday at the MSC ground in Thomas Lands.
Played in sultry conditions, Qualafon’s openers Kelon Carmichael and Marcus Watkins tore into the opposition bowlers in the grand finale of the four-team tournament, galloping to 58 without loss from four overs in reply to the 57-3 posted by Upper Level in a game reduced to 10 overs per side due to time constraints.
Skipper Carmichael smashed six fours and a six in his unbeaten 31 while Watkins’ 17 was decorated with two fours and a six.
Larry Smith top scored with 15 while former National player Lennox Cush hit two fours in 12 and ex-West Indies under-19 left-hander Kwame Cross pulled former Guyana under-19 pacer Seon Daniels for a six on top of MSC Pavilion and followed it up with a boundary in his 13, being the only batsmen to reach double figures as Daniels ended with 2-11.
Qualafon Guyana, which included former West Indies fast bowler Colin Stuart, received the Noble Seafoods Trophy for their effort.
National Park BBC, a team which comprises a group of entrepreneurs and media officials who come together daily at the National Park for physical activity and Wartsila Operations were the other teams in the competition, but both teams lost their matches yesterday.
The tournament was held to foster camaraderie and encourage physical activity among Corporate Guyana and to raise funds for Malteenoes’ developmental drive.
Each team had the presence of guest cricketers to bolster their ranks. Stuart and Carmaichael (Qualafon), Cush & Jermaine Neblette (Upper Level Barbers), Roderick Lovel & Paul Castello (Nat Park BBC) and Neil Barry, Sean Holder and Troy Lewis (Wartsila) all came out of retirement to don their whites for the worthy cause.
The tournament which attracted a ‘who is who’ of former National cricketers and others sporting personalities, was sponsored by Noble House Seafoods, Star Party Rental and Friends of Malteenoes and was deemed a success by the Organisers. (Sean Devers)
