A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s Shadow Minister of Public Works and Telecommunications, Joseph Harmon, is calling on citizens to “condemn the politics of division which was being preached by the government on Sunday last at the Babu John Crematorium in observance of the 17th death anniversary of President Dr. Cheddi Jagan”.
Harmon said that given the opportunity to embrace the reconciliation of the people of the country the members of the government instead sought to preach division.
“They were given the opportunity to embrace reconciliation and promote unity. Instead, they instead chose to fan the flames of division; promoting fear instead of hope, partisanship instead of statesmanship.”
The Member of Parliament informed that on Sunday last, before the Babu John memorial, APNU Leader David Granger spoke to members of the Corentyne community calling on them to commit to national unity and renounce thoughts of retaliation.
This presentation, he highlighted, was in stark contrast to the comments made by the General Secretary of People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Clement Rohee.
“He told his audience that APNU is an enemy of national unity.”
The Shadow Minister quoted Rohee as saying “They seem to be entrapped in a philosophy of self destruction while sitting in parliament with the one-seat majority and watching Guyana burn as they play around with the country’s future like they are doing with the AML/CFT Bill.”
But Harmon charged that APNU remains the only political force in Guyana that is committed to the formation of national unity and ridding Guyana of the “winner-take-all politics.”
“We want to ensure that our multicultural society will succeed through respect for diversity and the sacrifices of our citizens.”
The PPP/C, he said, in all its years of governance has neglected the human resources of the nation. “They have abandoned clean governance which was promised by the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan. They have paid no attention to the plight of the working man. Instead the government has eroded our values and compromised the quality of life of Guyanese.”
The politician then reiterated his calls for Guyanese to remain united and not succumb to the venomous politics of the PPP.
