Charles Anthony Woolford is scheduled to face a second retrial for the murder of his wife, Latoya Conway-Woolford, after a mixed 12 –member jury, failed to reach a verdict on the matter yesterday
After several hours of deliberation, the panel returned to the courtroom of Justice Navindra Singh and announced that they were unsuccessful in reaching a decision.
The clearly frustrated man shook his head, as he made his way to the holding cell to be escorted back to the Georgetown Prisons.
Woolford was indicted in 2009 for killing his wife, a beautician.
The victim was stabbed several times about her body on February 8, 2009 at her Lot 2041 Hummingbird Street, North Ruimveldt home, allegedly during a heated argument with her husband.
The hairdresser, and mother of three is said to have had her stomach sliced open during the ordeal. She succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) while receiving treatment.
Woolford, a self-employed construction worker at the time, tried to end his life by ingesting what is believed to be a poisonous liquid, a few hours after learning of his wife’s demise.
He was hospitalized but was later released to face the murder charge.
Woolford made his initial appearance at the High Court before Justice James Bovell-Drakes. However, the Judge ordered that he face a retrial after the Jury failed to reach a verdict last August.
The accused who had maintained his innocence, pleaded not guilty to the indictment before Justice Navindra Singh, after a mixed 12- member jury was empanelled, earlier last month.
Attorneys Peter Hugh and Latchmie Rahamat provided legal counsel for the accused, while Prosecutor Dhanika Singh represented the state’s case.
