The Guyana Police Force saved itself further embarrassment when its ranks captured a thief who was trying to break into one of the buildings in the Brickdam Police Station compound.
The thief was captured just after midnight Wednesday.
If he had been successful with his plans, it would have been the third night in a row that the divisional headquarters would have been hit by burglars.
Kaieteur News understands that the culprit who is said to be a drug addict from the nearby Leopold Street area, had already scaled the fence at the back of the compound (Hadfield Street) when he was held.
According to reports, the embarrassment of the two previous nights forced the police to increase their vigilance in the compound and it certainly paid off with the capture of the thief who is expected to appear in court today.
However, the suspect is vehemently maintaining that he was not responsible for the two previous burglaries.
In what was described as a total embarrassment, thieves had targeted the Brickdam headquarters of the Police ‘A’ Division for two nights in a row, carting off hundreds of thousands of dollars in items.
The first attack occurred on Tuesday night when the burglars raided the Court Superintendent Office, helping themselves to a desktop computer. The following day, the thieves struck again, this time targeting the canteen.
This newspaper was unable to ascertain what was stolen from the canteen.
Initially investigators had suspected that it was the work of insiders.
