A man who was serving time in the New Amsterdam prison when he escaped from lawful custody while out on an errand has been captured and jailed again.
The man, Zaman Baksh, was among a group of prisoners carrying out duties on April 20, last, in the compound of the Central Police Station when he escaped. He was recaptured in October in Kitty, Georgetown.
He appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court on Friday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and pleaded guilty.
The convict told the court that on the day in question he was indeed working in the station compound, but was not being supervised. He said that he received a disturbing phone call that his wife had taken another man and that the man was ill treating his daughter. So he went to see what was going on.
He told the court that he knew it was wrong to escape, but he had to deal with some matters. He said that he was only serving a one year sentence.
He told the Magistrate, “I can take another one year.” However, he was sentenced to two years in jail.
