After repairing two generators which have been powering the Port Kaituma, Region One community and ensuring that they worked for several weeks, a mechanic is complaining that officials out of the Office of the Prime Minister are withholding his final payment.
Chrisne David, who has been a mechanic for 45 years, is questioning the motive behind officials not making complete payments for the service he rendered when he renovated the two heavy duty generators.
The 628 KVA and 500 KVA generators were repaired, after a prolonged period of load shedding that began last August.
“The manager of the power station, Shawn James, and Horace Williams who operates out of the Prime Minister’s office, had knowledge of my commencement of works on the two generators and he asked me to liaison with him, and after giving him updates on three occasions, he stopped answering my calls. Then when the engine done fix and running I got onto him and I told him everything is ok,” David explained.
He added that he also hired two additional mechanics to work along with him on the generators. This incurred a cost of hotel bills and various payments. As such he requested $800,000 to cover operational cost.
“The two mechanics hotel bills alone were almost $200,000. I received most of the money to clear my bills but I am being owed $270,000. Then (Horace Williams) told me that they can’t pay me anymore money because he didn’t engage me to do the work to such an extent on the generators and that Shawn James has to deal with me. When I calling James phone I am not getting through and I am being told I have no more money to collect for the work I had done,” David lamented.
David explained that the officials were supposed to pay $2.7M each for fuel injectors to be replaced on the generators. “And I save this cost for them, since I cleaned and serviced all these injectors and they are working properly. Now they don’t want to pay me in full, although I told them I would give free check up service on these generators. Something does not seem right and it appears that there needs to be an investigation.”
According to Richard Allen who sits on the Board of Directors for the power company, the generators were down since August 2013 and now that David has got the engines up and running he should be paid.
“I hope the system will be managed properly. Many things fall apart because of how the system is being managed, and there is great concern in the community about how many issues are handled,” Allen noted.
