Minister of Health, Bheri Ramsaran said that the expired drugs which were dumped at the Agricola Health Centre more than two weeks ago were given to his Ministry by a donor agency.
The Minister made this statement recently, reiterating that the expired medications were taken to the centre so that it could be stored in a vacant flat until representatives from the Food and Drugs Department were ready to destroy them.
Two Wednesdays ago this publication was called in after workers from the Health Ministry were seen dumping boxes of what turned out to be expired medications in the health centre’s compound.
When this publication visited the facility, two of the four workers were seen taking the drugs out of the Ministry’s truck while the other two collected and dumped it in the compound, just a stone’s throw from the gate.
Some of the medication seen by this newspaper had expired since 2010.
While dumping the drugs, the workers came under attack from a group of men, some of whom had guns.
During an interview with this newspaper yesterday, Minister Ramsaran said he was informed that the workers were doing just what they were informed to do when “lawlessness” took over.
He said that the Director for Regional Health Services was simply separating the expired drugs from the viable ones and was advised to store the expired ones in a flat at the Agricola Health Centre until they were ready to be destroyed.
“Workers taking the drugs for legitimate purposes were beaten by certain aggressive elements in the village. They were instigated by known persons and authorities are looking into it,” Ramsaran said.
According to the Minister, the drugs were not taken from the hospitals or the Ministry’s bond. It was removed from the “abandoned” building on Waterloo Street which used to be the Doctors’ Quarter.
Asked why the medications were stored in an abandoned building, the Minister responded, “You are being difficult now. Don’t flip words on me. You are just like the Adam Harris. This interview is over, I am going.”
Meanwhile, an official from the Agricola Health Centre said that the drugs were removed from the location last week.
