Local entertainment was at its best yesterday, as Guyanese flocked the streets of Georgetown to get a glimpse of the annual Mashramani Float Parade.
As early as 09:30hrs spectators began taking up their positions along the Mash route, with groups of families and friends clumped under tents, and trees along the Merriman’s Mall, from time to time, urging revelers, “Ya’ll dance, we want see y’all dance!”
Incorporating the theme of this year’s Mashramani celebration, ‘Cultural Folklore Celebrating 44,’ the brightly coloured floats sparkled in the sunlight, lighting up the faces of children and adults alike.
Participants from Government agencies and Private Sector entities put out a show for the thousands of onlookers, who by midday had crowded the parade route, which went from Camp Street onto Church Street, then Vlissingen Road and toward the National Park. The day might have been a fete for many but there were still commercial entities which took the opportunity to earn additional cash. In fact, some stores and stalls in and around the route were opened. Noticeable were the walk and sell vendors stocked with cold water to quench spectators’ thirst, as a result of the heat and gyration.
Described by some viewers as an invasion of folklore and culture, the snake like procession, which stalled ever so often to give onlookers a good look at the various costumes, depicted local legends ‘Water Momma,’ ‘Massacura Man,’ and ‘De Moon Gazer.’
Ministers of Government Priya Manickchand and Jennifer Webster, as well as Dr. Frank Anthony lead the floats of their individual Ministries.
Among the other attractions that wowed the crowds was the Guyana Trans United Association, which represented the gays, lesbian and transgender persons.
Dicigel’s large procession stood out as the revelers were radiant in their neon pink and gold, Arabian and Egyptian themed costumes.
Partygoers aboard Pulse Entertainment Trucks released gold and silver confetti into the air as they went along; this year the entertainment consisted of six large trucks. A small band of revelers representing GT Beer gyrated to popular Soca music played by a large Banks Beer Truck. The general view of onlookers was that while this year’s Parade was entertaining, it seemed “small in comparison to previous years.”
“We ain’t really know what happen. The floats dem alright but like plenty people ain’t participate this time around,” one spectator noted.
However, yesterday’s road march was deemed an overall success by Minister of Cultural, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony
“Mashramani”, an Amerindian word meaning ‘Celebration After Hard Work,’ is the designated observance for Guyana’s Republic Anniversary. The cultural event which began in Linden several decades ago evolved into country celebrations, with the Mashramani Float Parade marking the peak of the festivities.
