Guyanese born, Trinidad and Tobago Journalist and Cricket commentator Brij Parasnath made a strong case for Shemaine Campbelle to be considered for Sportswoman of the year. He highlighted her outstanding performances during the year in question, 2013, pointing out that the young lady holds a record that many are not fully aware of. Here is what Parasnath wrote:
Shemaine Campbelle set a new World Record for the highest score by a woman player batting at number seven for the West Indies Women team against Sri Lanka at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on February 24 2013.
With West Indies team in serious trouble at 23 for 5, Campbelle showed tremendous character and grit as she revived and restored respectability with a magnificent 105 that was studded with four sixes and eight fours off 138 balls.
West Indies made 180 for 8 off their allotted overs with Shemaine Campbelle setting another World Record of getting the highest percentage of the team’s total of over 100 runs or more.
She contributed 58.33 percent of the overall total which bettered the previous record held by Australia’s great Melinda Clark of 57.48 percent with 142 out of 247 for 5 versus New Zealand at Auckland on February 16, 1997.
With the face-saving 105; Shemaine also returned excellent bowling figures of 6-0-30-1 and joined an elite group of players to score a century and claim a wicket in the same One Day International.
It is significant to note that no single West Indian male player ever achieved that unique distinction of scoring a ODI century at the number seven position, much less a World Record.
It is also important to recognise that Shemaine Campbell registered the World Record feat at age 20 years 133 days and became the second youngest West Indian player to achieve the distinction of scoring a triple-figure mark in Women’s ODIs.
Shemaine also contributed to West Indies series success over the Sri Lankans when she topscored and also returned the best all-round performance in the Third ODIs versus the Sri Lankans at the same venue.
Out of the 191 for 9 off 50 overs, Shemaine Campbelle, batting again at the number 8 position; topscored with 37 and had figures of 6-0-29-1 as West Indies restricted the Sri Lankans to 158 for 9 and clinched the three-match series by a 2-1 margin.
West Indies had won the first match by 4 wickets with 72 balls to spare. Sri Lanka made 164 for 9 off 50 overs with Shemaine Campbelle finishing with 50-13-2. WI amassed 165 for 6 off 30 overs and had taken the series lead.
Apart from her outstanding performances against the Sri Lankans, Shemaine Campbelle was a member of the West Indies Women team that created history and contested the ICC Women World Cup final against the mighty Australians whom they defeated in the Super Six stage during the 2013 ICC Women World Cup staged in India.
WI Women beat the Aussies by eight runs in the Super Six with Shemaine Campbelle effectively cutting short Australia’s progress when she brilliantly run out Australia’s top all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar for 6 and helped to restrict Australia to 156 in reply to West Indies 164. It was a sensational victory by the WI Women team in the ICC World Cup.
They were unable to reproduce their outstanding performance in final but they created history by finishing as runner-up World Champion to the Aussies. Campbelle also brought off a spectacular catch to dismiss Sthalekar in the final off Shanaqua Quintyne’s bowling. Sthalekar made 12 and Campbelle had figures of 3-0-15-0 in the final at the famous Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on February 13, 2013.
The World Cup is the summit of achievement and Shemaine Campbelle’s outstanding contributions for the West Indies Women teams (ODIs and T20s) for 2013 deserves the nation’s recognition as the country’s premier female sports personality.
She also contributed to WI Women sharing the five-match series with South Africa and defeated New Zealand in the three-match ODIs series against New Zealand at Sabina Park and also winning the Tri-Nations series versus England and New Zealand at Kensington Oval last in 2013.
Shemaine Campbelle was unquestionably Guyana’s Most Outstanding female and male performer for the 2013. She definitely deserves to the honoured as Guyana’s Sportswoman of the Year 2013.
Note: Her World Record performances have not been recognised by any person associated with West Indies cricket or even international cricket (ICC) at the administrative levels or even among media professionals.
