The February-May session of the Essequibo Criminal Assizes opened with the routine march past engaging ranks of ‘G’ Division. Presiding Judge, Narweshwar Harnanan, took the salute from Commander of “G” Division Dale Alves, on the lawns of the Richard Fikhal Training College.
The Commander was accompanied by junior ranks of the Division.
A report emanating from the Suddie High Court states that there would be trials for five murders, four manslaughters, one attempted murder, three cases of carnal knowledge, three rape cases, two incest and one buggery during this session.
One of the murder cases involves a Lima Dam, Essequibo Coast woman, who police accused of murdering her paramour in 2012.
Joylyn Benn, of Lima Dam, Essequibo Coast is accused of murdering Dennis Braithwaite on Christmas Day, 2012, at Lima Dam.
Initial reports had stated that both Braithwaite and Benn were consuming alcohol at their Lima Dam home when a heated argument erupted. It was later alleged that Benn stabbed Braithwaite.
Braithwaite subsequently died and Benn was arrested. Benn is being represented by a state-appointed lawyer, Latchmie Dindyal.
The trial commenced on January 28, last. Five persons have testified so far.
