Level 11 WICB accredited coach, Elroy Stephney, has commenced an extensive coaching programme at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground for youths between the ages of 12-15 residing within North Essequibo.
They have been preparing for an under-15 tournament that has been organised by the South Essequibo Cricket Committee which has already commenced with North Essequibo winning their first match.
Meanwhile, Stephney’s sessions include batting, bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping drills. He told Kaieteur Sport on Friday that the attendance has been quite heartening. Stephney further lamented that despite the limited resources and since an under-15 competition was not held for many years in the county, he decided to voluntarily make himself available to assist in improving the cricketing skills and career of the younger players.
He pointed out that there is an abundance of talent that exist in Essequibo and that the sessions which are being held daily from 16:00-18:30 hrs also serves to instill discipline, team building and good work ethics that will contribute towards enhancing their success individually and as a unit.
Stephney has also expressed his admiration for the support that the parents have been giving. “This it is a positive sign since it meant that they are interested in their children’s career, a collaboration that has not worked in the past, hence many promising young cricketers were denied the opportunity to progress,” he added.
He is appealing to the ECB and the other area committees to provide a suitable environment for the youngsters by organising more youth tournaments and coaching clinics on a regular basis. His coaching programme will continue indefinitely and he is encouraging other young cricketers who are willing to learn and play the game to attend the sessions.
