The residents of Lethem who were plunged into darkness because of malfunctions to the Lethem Power Company generators have received some relief since one has been fixed, providing sectional (5 hours) power to Lethem and its environs.
Kaieteur News was informed that the two new 750 Kilowatt generators that were procured to address the greater influx of power being demanded by Lethem consumers have also arrived and will be installed by the engineers attached to the Power Company come Monday. When those generators are up and running, residents should benefit from 24 hours electricity to Lethem and its environs such as Moco Moco, Culvert City, St. Ignatius, Tabatinga and the commercial zone.
Residents of Lethem had complained to this newspaper that there had been a spate of blackouts since Saturday last. This situation magnified to a situation of complete power outage. Some of the residents said that they were told by the Lethem Power Company (last week) that power will be restored in two weeks time because the generator used to supply Lethem with power is not working.
The residents, because of the non availability of power had been without water, adding to their discomfort and severely affecting the operations of schools, businesses and government agencies that depend on both water and power to function.
This news agency was reliably informed that two generators usually provide electricity to the community: a large one for everyday purposes, and a smaller one that is utilized as a backup. He added that both of them broke down, resulting in the ensuing outages. He explained that a message was circulated about the breakdown and residents were asked to be patient while the problem is being fixed.
According to the official, an engineer diagnosed that the head of the larger generator is damaged and that part was transported to Boa Vista (Brazil) to be fixed or replaced. However Kaieteur News was reliably informed that the part was deemed not serviceable and Brazil does not have a replacement.
When it becomes operational, it is expected to supplement the two new generators to cover approximately 36 grids within Lethem.
