The sudden demise of top football coach, Peter Lashley has left members of the football fraternity in deep shock and already his charges, many of whom he nurtured from the nursery stages, are contemplating the void left in their personal and professional lives. He was 54 years old.
Reports are that Lashley, who lives with his wife and children in Tucville Terrace, left his home at around 06:15hrs yesterday for the John Fernandes Company where he works as a gate clerk. His wife of 18 years, Lorraine, said that when her husband was getting dressed she fondly inquired whether he wanted to dress in red and white in celebration of Valentine’s Day. She said that Peter declined and left home after bidding her goodbye.
Lorraine said that shortly afterwards someone called to inform her that her husband was involved in an accident and before she could have left home she learnt that he had died. The visibly distraught woman said she is still in shock at the turn of events and is turning to the Lord for strength and sustenance.
Meanwhile, former national coach, Lennox Arthur was aghast and said that he has had fruitful relations with Lashley. He said that he had trained him during his active years in the sport during the mid seventies. Arthur said that his friend had developed into a top football coach and he (Arthur) had selected him to accompany the Major’s All Star team scheduled to play in Suriname March 17 next.
Human Resources Manager (John Fernandes), Donna Roberts Benjamin, said that the news came as a shock and the entire company is thrown into mourning. She said that Lashley was employed at her company since 2000 and she admired his passion for football. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff, I wish to express deep sympathy to his sorrowing widow, his children, the football fraternity and all affected by his death,” Ms Roberts Benjamin said.
Lashley is survived by 3 children, all boys, Kobie, Nicholas and Jamal. Kaieteur News wishes to extend heartfelt sympathy to his wife, children, the football fraternity and all those affected by the untimely passing of this football stalwart. May his soul rest in eternal peace!
